The module introduces the student to the history and role of ethnobotanical research in terms of the relationship between human societies and plants in various regions of the world. It emphasizes the reasons and ways of using plants for ornamental, medical, cosmetic, fiber, construction, religious, "magic" and other purposes. It also provides knowledge about eating habits and their changes throughout the development of civilization (cultivated and wild plants) . In the case of this subject, it is important to familiarize students with the role of man in shaping plant communities and the directions

of changes that have occurred and are taking place in them, as a result of the development and evolution of human civilization, including the natural consequences of the development of settlement and agriculture. The student has the opportunity to see, among others with the composition of ancient and modern agrocenoses and with new research directions related to the development of urban ethnobotany (e.g. traveling cultures and plants, ceremonial plants, urban agri-biodiversity, plants of city fairs), with particular emphasis on the territory of Europe. The module also aims to emphasize the importance of using the achievements of ethnobiology in the sustainable management of current and potential natural resources, especially in the context of food security. The cultural aspect of using plants also includes their symbolism, e.g. of biblical plants. The aim of the module is also to familiarize students with the elements of ethnoecology and research methodology. Moreover, it shows the attitude towards nature of various ethnic groups, changes in human understanding and attitude towards the natural environment, the ecosystem consequences of its exploitation and the physiological and psychological impact of communing with nature on the human body. The module also promotes pro-ecological behavior, especially

in the area of the urban ecosystem.
