Zakres tematów:

1. Getting started in research (Planning a career in science, applying for research funding, writing u a resume or CV, preparing for an interview).

2. The scientific community (communicating with scientific communities, writing a critical review, completing a material transfer agreement).

3. Finding direction for your research (doing a literature review, using evidence in arquing a point, taking part in a meeting).

4. Designing an experiment (describing approaches to data collection, designing an experimental set-up, describing material phenomena and forces, making predictions of experimental results).

5. Describing an experiment (describing a process, evaluating the results of an experiment, describing problems with an experiment, keeping a lab notebook).

6. Writing up research:

a. material and methods (describing states and processes, describing data: numbers/numerical values, writing up from lab notes)

b. presenting data (analyzing data (statistical analysis), summarizing data in visual form, writing captions for figures, describing visual data)

c. results and discussion (organizing the results and discussion sections, preparing and writing the results section, preparing and writing the discussion section)

d. introduction and abstract (writing the introduction, writing the abstract, giving a title to your paper, contacting journals)

6. Presenting research at a conference (giving a paper at a conference, socializing at a conference, presenting poster)

Metody dydaktyczne:

Lessons performed in small groups under teacher supervision. The emphasis is on students' speaking.

Metody i kryteria oceniania:

Grades are awarded on a scale: A-F, where A is excellent and F is fail.

Excellent performance (A) – a student actively participates in the lessons, demonstrates excellent understanding of the lessons (their aims, sequence and outcomes) is independent and creative in solving current problems and in an assessment and presentation of experimental work. A student knows how to use the scientific terms.

Very good performance (B) - a student actively participates in lessons, demonstrates very good understanding of the lessons (their aims, sequence and outcomes) is independent in solving current problems and in an assessment and presentation of experimental work. A student is competent to use scientific terms.

Good performance (C) – a student demonstrates good judgment and knowledge, correctly conducts all work during the lectures, correctly exhibits a sense of the lecture, properly provides an assessment and presentation of experimental results.

Satisfactory performance (D) – a student demonstrates satisfactory judgment and knowledge, is poorly engaged and needs additional assistance to finish the exercises. A student is familiar with the basic and advanced terms of scientific English but is not competent enough to perform using of it.

With minimum academic criteria (E) – a student is poorly engaged in lecture and needs additional assistance to finish the exercises during the lectures. A student is familiar with the basic terms of Scientific English but is not competent enough to independently use the term of it.

Performance that does not meet the minimum academic criteria (F) – a student is not engaged in lectures, does not exhibit a sense of experimental procedures, poorly interprets and presents experimental work. A student is not familiar with the basic and advanced terms of Scientific English.
